DIFFICULTY

We’ll use our summer fitness to explore the terrain between three fascinating hilltop towns of Umbria. We’ll traverse from north to south experiencing the rolling Umbrian terrain with it’s grand vistas, wide valleys, and picturesque villages.

WHERE WE STAY

After spending time in Umbria it seems correct to think of the region as Tuscany’s big sister. The small villages are a little larger, the hillsides a little higher, the valleys a little wider. Big on charm, history, and good food, we’re excited to spend a week in Umbria with you.

This tour will begin with transportation from Perugia to the village of Gubbio where we’ll pass our first two nights before transferring south to Spoleto. After three nights enjoying Spoleto we’ll head west to Orvieto where we’ll spend our last three nights and days exploring the area. The tour will end with transportation to the local train station of Orvieto which has trains connecting to Florence and Rome.

GEARED FOR

This is a 3-pig tour and an ideal way to enjoy your earned summer fitness.

We will have two 60 mile transfer days, one of which is more hilly than the other. Otherwise plan on most days ranging from 30 to 45 miles, always with some hilly terrain, but a surprising amount of gentle and flatter terrain as well.

Non-Cycling partners are welcome to join this tour, although we will not have a specific itinerary to offer off the bike, these are lovely locations that will offer walking, museums, shopping & relaxing.

TOUR HIGHLIGHTS

Our tour will take us to three picturesque, hilltop Umbrian Villages—Gubbio, Spoleto and Orvieto.

Gubbio is situated on the lower slopes of the Apennine mountains with expansive views of the open plain below. The city has a large Roman theater to visit and plenty of medieval-gothic architecture to enjoy. Our loop rides with take us over gentle rolling farm roads, and one day into the Marche region to visit a Roman bridge.

Our first transfer day to Spoleto will follow the base of the mountain range following the roman Via Flamina. We’ll base on the lower side of Spoleto for easy access to cycling routes but will take advantage of the many winding roads and escalators to the top of town with sweeping views from the fortress of Rocca Albornoziana and the Ponte Delle Torri.

Orvieto will be our last stop where the gentle valley gives way to more challenging hills and ridges. Our two rides will visit the nearby clay hills of Lazio, featuring the abandoned town of Civita di Bagnoregio and the wooded hills of Ospedaletto. We’ll stay in the center of town within arms length of an enormous selection of history (and another fortress of Rocca Albornoziana), art, shopping, and eating.

With so much to experience on and off the bike our aim most days will be to be back for lunch with afternoons open for city exploring. Most days there will be flexibility to ride more (or less) depending on your off-the-bike sightseeing desires.
