This is a giro-style tour designed to explore the out of the way places we love to visit on our own. Our journey will take us to three unique Tuscan locations, roaming from the historical rich lands of Val d’Orcia, the wild Mediterranean cliffs of Elba, and the vineyard lined slopes of the Maremma.Book this tour
Our first three nights we will stay in the beautiful village of San Quirico located in the Val d’Orcia. Our rides here will loop throughout some of Tuscany’s classic countryside (think Pienza, Montalcino, Trequanda). After exploring south-central Tuscany we will make our way to the island of Elba for three nights. Here we will ride with cliff-side views of the Mediterranean and through the pine forests in the interior of the island. Our final two nights will take us to the Maremma and our home village of Castagneto Carducci where we’ll ride our favorite local routes through the chestnut woods and vineyard lined slopes.
Cyclists looking to see a range of terrain over the week will appreciated this giro-style tour.
Our routes are selected to get us to wonderful villages with great vistas and little traffic. This means we ride smaller roads with hilly terrain. The long climbs are few and under 9 ks, the steep sections are short and around 12% grade maximum. Riding consistently before this tour is recommended and generous gears will go to good use. Our guide-to-guest ratio will allow for various paced groups to form during the rides.
This is a wonderfully scenic trip for non-cyclists or individuals looking to ride some but not all of the days. We will not have a specific itinerary as an alternative to riding but we can guarantee great views, food, and wine.
We’ve been rediscovering Tuscany and look forward to spending time cycling throughout these three distinct areas over the course of the week. Our rides will take us on some of Tuscany’s most spectacularly abandoned roads, our wines will be local and draw from the designated wine areas of Bolgheri, Val d’Orcia, Montalcino, and Elba.
San Quirico is a beautifully restored village in the province of Siena. With a rich history throughout the Roman times, there is plenty to explore by foot between the churches, museums, and gardens. The strategic location is ideal for us cyclists, allowing fabulous loop rides through some of Tuscany’s most famous countryside.
We have visited Elba often with our tours over the years, and love the water and beaches, and the ancient Etruscan and Roman history. If the weather is calm we will organize some water based activities on our suggested rest day.
Castagneto Carducci is saturated with cycling history; many champions have come from here, trained here, and still live here. Andy has been coming here since his early cycling days with team Motorola and can’t seem to leave. The terrain is quiet, rolling, and varied with vineyards, gardens, and olive groves.
This tour begins and ends with transportation to Pisa airport PSA
